Golf Fitness Personal Training in Phoenix, AZ

Turn better, protect your back and finish 18 holes with energy left, with strength and mobility training built around your golf season.

What Is Golf Fitness Training in Phoenix?

Golf fitness training in Phoenix at Form Fitness is 1-on-1 strength and mobility work with Matt Pithers, a kinesiology-trained personal trainer certified since 2009. Sessions target hip and upper-back rotation, core and leg strength, back health and stamina for 18 holes. Training is $100 per session in-studio, $150 at home, or $200 a month online.

Maybe your back tightens up by the back nine, or you can't turn the way you used to. Or you just want to walk a full round in March without dragging by the 15th hole.

None of that means you need a new driver. Most of the time it means your body needs a little more strength, a little more mobility and a plan that respects your tee times. Book a free consultation and Matt will show you where to start.

Why Golfers Train With Matt

Matt Pithers has been a certified personal trainer since 2009 and co-owns Form Fitness with his wife, Hannah. He holds a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, the study of how the body moves, which is exactly the lens a golf swing needs.

Matt is a strength and mobility coach, not a swing coach. He won't rebuild your grip or your takeaway. He'll make sure your hips can rotate, your core can handle the speed and your back can take a season of rounds, so the swing your pro teaches you has a body that can repeat it.

Matt knows what it's like to love a rotational sport and want to keep playing it for decades. We train for LIFE.

What Can Golf Fitness Training Do for You?

A Healthier Lower Back

The low back is the body part golfers hurt most often. A review in the Asian Journal of Sports Medicine found low back pain makes up 18 to 54 percent of reported golf ailments, and lists trunk strength, trunk endurance and better hip and trunk rotation among the ways to help prevent it. Those are the basics of this program.

More Rotation Where It Counts

When your hips and upper back don't turn, your lower back usually picks up the slack. Matt builds mobility through the hips and mid-back, then strength in those new positions so the range holds up when you swing hard.

A Shot at More Clubhead Speed

A critical review in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine found that stronger golfers tended to have higher clubhead speed, ball speed and driving distance, with leg and hip power, trunk power and grip strength standing out. The authors also noted that few studies isolate strength training on its own, so results vary.

Stamina for a Full Round

Walking 18 holes means hours on your feet, often on uneven lies. Stronger legs and better conditioning help you swing as well on the last hole as on the first.

Golf Season in Phoenix: How to Train In Season and Off Season

Phoenix and Scottsdale golf is busiest from roughly October through April, so your training follows the same rhythm.

PeriodTypical monthsTraining focusSessions a week
Off seasonRoughly May to SeptemberBuild strength and power, fix mobility limits2 to 3
PreseasonLate September to OctoberShift to speed, rotation and stamina2
In seasonRoughly October to AprilMaintain strength, keep the back happy, recover well1 to 2

Off season is when you get better: you're playing less, so you can lift heavier indoors and out of the afternoon heat. In season, shorter sessions hold on to that strength, and Matt plans the hard work away from your big rounds.

Matt includes a short pre-round warm-up in your plan, and because heat matters in Phoenix, summer training happens indoors or early in the day, as the CDC's heat guidance for athletes recommends.

How Does Golf Fitness Training Work?

It starts with a conversation about your game and your body, and the plan follows your golf calendar from there.

1.

Free consultation: Meet Matt at the studio or over video chat, and tell him how often you play, what hurts and when your big events are.

2.

Assessment: Matt checks your strength, mobility and measurements, with a close look at hip and upper-back rotation, single-leg balance and how your back handles bending and turning.

3.

Your plan: Train at the studio, at home or online, with sessions timed around your tee times. Online clients get their workouts each week in the Form Fitness app.

4.

Check-ins every 4 weeks: Matt re-tests and adjusts as the season changes. Many people feel a difference within a few weeks, and a lasting habit usually takes six months to a year.

04 Play for Decades

The goal isn't one great round. It's still walking 18 at 75.

FAQs About Golf Fitness Training

Will strength training hurt my golf swing?

No. Done well, strength training supports your swing rather than stiffening it, because we pair strength with mobility so you keep your range of motion. Matt also times heavier sessions away from your important rounds.

Can golf fitness training add distance to my drives?

It can help, but no one can promise you yards. A review in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine found stronger golfers tend to have higher clubhead speed and driving distance, though few studies isolate strength training on its own. What we can promise is a stronger, more mobile body, and that gives your swing more to work with.

What helps lower back pain from golf?

Building trunk strength and endurance, improving hip and upper-back rotation and warming up before you play are the main strategies researchers point to. Pushing a cart instead of carrying your bag on your shoulders helps too. If back pain is sharp, spreads down your leg or lasts more than a few weeks, see a doctor or physical therapist before you train through it.

How should I train in season versus off season?

Build in the off season and maintain in season. In Phoenix that usually means 2 to 3 strength sessions a week through the summer, then 1 to 2 shorter sessions a week from roughly October through April. Matt plans the harder sessions away from tournaments and big rounds.

Do you work with my golf pro?

Yes, we're happy to coordinate with your pro. Matt is not a swing coach and won't change your swing mechanics. If your pro sees a physical limit, like a restricted hip turn, Matt can build that into your training.

What is a good warm-up before a round of golf?

Spend about 10 minutes moving before you swing hard: a brisk walk, bodyweight squats, hip hinges, gentle torso turns with a club across your shoulders, then half swings working up to full ones. Keep everything pain-free.

How much does golf fitness training cost in Phoenix?

At Form Fitness, an in-studio golf fitness session is $100 with no contract, or $950 for 10 sessions. In-home training starts at $150 a session, and online coaching is $200 a month. Your first consultation is free.
