Muscle Building Personal Training for Men in Phoenix, AZ

Put on real size and strength with a coach who has competed in bodybuilding, without wrecking your joints or guessing at what to do next.

What Is Muscle Building Personal Training in Phoenix?

Muscle building personal training in Phoenix at Form Fitness is a 1-on-1 lifting program with Matt Pithers, a certified trainer since 2009 who has won bodybuilding competitions. It covers progressive overload, lifting technique, recovery and practical protein guidance. Sessions are $100 at our Midtown Phoenix studio, $150 in your home, or $200 a month online.

Maybe you've been lifting on your own and your numbers haven't moved in months. Or maybe you've never followed a real program and you're tired of doing whatever machine is open.

Either way, building muscle isn't complicated, but it does take a plan you follow for long enough to work. Matt writes that plan, coaches every rep, and tells you straight when something needs to change. Book a free consultation and he'll show you where to start.

Why Lifters Train With Matt

Matt came up through bodybuilding and has won NANBF bodybuilding competitions in Kansas City and St. Louis in 2014, competing in the Men’s Natural tall division. Getting stage-ready teaches you what actually builds muscle and what's just noise. He also has a degree in kinesiology, so the hard training comes with an understanding of how joints and muscles work.

His reason for training is personal. Health problems tied to poor diet and inactivity run in Matt's family, and he thinks it would be a shame to grow old without finding out what your body can do.

Clients call his style no-nonsense. He'll push you hard, and he'll also tell you when to back off.

What Can Muscle Building Training Do for You?

Most guys who stall aren't lazy. They're missing structure: the right volume, steady progression and enough recovery to grow.

Add Size Where You Want It

The American College of Sports Medicine's 2026 resistance training guidance suggests roughly 10 sets per muscle group each week if muscle growth is your goal. Matt spreads that work across your sessions, so you recover and grow between them instead of burning out.

Get Measurably Stronger

The same ACSM guidance points to heavier loads, around 80 percent of your one-rep max for 2 to 3 sets, for building strength. Matt uses progressive overload, adding a little weight, a rep or a set over time, and tracks your lifts so you can see the numbers climb.

Know What to Do Every Session

No more wandering between machines. Every session has target weights and reps, so each workout builds on the last one.

Keep Lifting for Decades

Good technique and smart exercise choices keep your shoulders, back and knees healthy, and if a lift bothers an old injury there's almost always another way to train the same muscle. Over 40? See how Matt adapts the plan in personal training for men over 40. We train for LIFE.

New to Lifting or Stuck on a Plateau?

Matt coaches both ends of the spectrum, and the plan looks different for each.

If you're new to lifting, you have the most to gain. The ACSM's 2026 guidance notes that the biggest jump in results comes from going from no resistance training to any resistance training. Your first few months are about learning the main lifts, like squats, deadlifts, presses and rows, and building the habit of showing up.

If you've been lifting for years, the job is finding what's holding you back. Matt looks at your training log, technique, sleep and eating, then changes only what needs changing, often a new rep scheme, a different exercise variation or a planned lighter week before you push again. If you'd rather build strength with bodyweight skills, he also coaches calisthenics.

How Does Muscle Building Training Work?

The process is the same for every client, but your plan is built around your lifting history and goals.

1.

Free consultation: Meet Matt at the studio or over video chat, and bring your current program or training log if you have one.

2.

Assessment: Matt checks your strength, mobility and measurements, and watches you perform the main lifts to spot technique issues early.

3.

Your plan: You get a program built for size and strength, with clear targets for each session and practical guidance on protein and recovery.

4.

Check-ins every 4 weeks: Matt reviews your lifts and measurements and adjusts the plan. Many people feel a difference within a few weeks, and a lasting habit usually takes six months to a year.

Matt's Principles for Building Muscle

01 Basics First

Squats, presses, rows, deadlifts and pull-ups do most of the work.

02 Track Everything

If you don't write down what you lifted, you can't beat it next week.

03 Form Before Weight

The weight goes up only when your reps are solid.

04 Recovery Is Training

Sleep, food and rest days are part of the program, not extras.

FAQs About Muscle Building Personal Training

How long does it take to build noticeable muscle?

Most people feel stronger within a few weeks, and visible size takes longer. How fast you see it depends on your training history, age, eating and sleep, so there's no honest one-size answer. Matt takes measurements at your check-ins every 4 weeks, so you can track progress before it shows in the mirror.

How much protein do I need to build muscle?

The International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests that 1.4 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight a day is enough for most people who exercise. Matt gives practical guidance on hitting your protein with everyday food, but we don't write meal plans. If you have a medical condition, check with your doctor first.

Can I build muscle and lose fat at the same time?

Yes, many men can, especially beginners and anyone carrying extra body fat. It takes consistent strength training, enough protein and a sensible eating pattern. Lean, experienced lifters usually do better focusing on one goal at a time, and if fat loss comes first, our weight loss training for men is built for that.

How many days a week should I lift to build muscle?

Lift at least two days a week, working every major muscle group. That's the minimum in the CDC's physical activity guidelines for adults. For muscle growth, the American College of Sports Medicine suggests roughly 10 sets per muscle group each week, which many lifters split across three or four sessions.

I've plateaued. What should I change?

Start by looking at your program, your volume and your recovery. Plateaus usually come from running the same routine too long, too little work for lagging muscles, poor sleep or not eating enough. Matt reviews your training log and technique, then adjusts reps, exercises or volume to get you moving again.

Can I build muscle training at home?

Yes, as long as you have enough equipment to keep adding challenge, like adjustable dumbbells, a bench or a squat rack. Matt trains clients at home in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley using the equipment they have. If your home setup is limited, the studio's full gym makes heavy lifting easier.
