Personal Training for Men Over 40 in Phoenix, AZ
Build muscle, work around the old injuries and stay active for decades. You haven't missed the window.
What Does Personal Training for Men Over 40 in Phoenix Involve?
Personal training for men over 40 in Phoenix at Form Fitness means 1-on-1 strength coaching with Matt Pithers, planned around your joints, old injuries and schedule. The focus is keeping muscle, moving well and protecting your long-term health. Sessions are $100 at our Midtown Phoenix studio, $150 in your home, or $200 a month online.
Somewhere after 40, recovery takes longer, a knee or shoulder complains more than it used to, and the weight hangs around. None of that means you're done. It means the way you train needs to change. Book a free consultation and Matt will show you where to start.
Why Men Over 40 Train With Matt
Matt Pithers has been a certified personal trainer since 2009, and he co-owns Form Fitness with his wife, Hannah. His background is in bodybuilding, calisthenics and nutrition training, and he has won bodybuilding competitions.
His real motivation is aging well. Health problems tied to poor diet and inactivity run in Matt's family, so he decided to stay strong and active for as long as he can, and he still plays tennis to keep that promise. That's the goal he sets with clients over 40: not chasing the body you had at 22, but being the guy who can still hike and carry his own luggage at 75. Matt says it would be a shame to grow old without finding out what your body can do.
Why Strength Training Matters More After 40
After 40, strength work does more for your health than almost anything else you can do in the gym.
Hold On to Your Muscle
NIH News in Health explains that muscle decline typically starts around age 30 and that age-related muscle loss, called sarcopenia, raises the risk of falls, broken bones and losing your independence. Regular strength training is how you push back.
Protect Your Heart and Metabolism
The American Heart Association's 2023 scientific statement on resistance training reports that it improves blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and body composition, with benefits noted particularly for older adults and people with higher cardiometabolic risk.
More Energy, Better Recovery
When you're stronger, yard work, a long day on your feet or a weekend of pickleball leaves you less beat up. Matt plans your week so you recover between sessions, instead of piling on work your body can't absorb.
Stay Steady on Your Feet
Balance fades quietly with age, and most men don't train it at all. The CDC's activity guidelines for older adults recommend balance activities alongside at least two days of muscle-strengthening work each week, and Matt builds both into your program.
Training Around Old Injuries
Most men over 40 come in with a story: a shoulder from high school football, a back that goes out every year, a knee that never felt right after surgery. Those injuries don't rule you out. If deep squats bother your knees or overhead pressing irritates a shoulder, Matt swaps in box squats, sled pushes or landmine presses so you build strength without the pain.
Matt is a trainer, not a doctor or physical therapist, so anything new, sharp or getting worse should be checked by a medical professional first. If you're already working with a physical therapist, Matt can pick up where your rehab leaves off.
How Does Personal Training for Men Over 40 Work?
It starts with an honest conversation about where you are today.
1.
Free consultation: Meet Matt at the studio or over video chat to talk through your goals, health history, medications that might matter for training, and past injuries.
2.
Assessment: Matt checks your strength, mobility, balance and measurements for a clear baseline, and spots the joints that need extra care.
3.
Your plan: Train at the studio, at home or online, with joint-friendly exercise choices and practical nutrition guidance. Most men over 40 start with two or three strength sessions a week.
4.
Check-ins every 4 weeks: Matt re-evaluates and adjusts as you get stronger. Many people feel a difference within a few weeks, and a lasting habit usually takes six months to a year.

FAQs About Personal Training for Men Over 40
No. Men build muscle in their 40s, 50s and well beyond, though progress may come a little slower than it did at 25. The American College of Sports Medicine's 2026 resistance training guidance found that the biggest jump in results comes from going from no resistance training to any at all, so if you're starting from zero, you have the most to gain.
Start with an assessment, then use exercise variations your joints tolerate and build strength around them. Matt swaps movements that cause pain for alternatives such as box squats, trap bar deadlifts or landmine presses. Anything new or getting worse should be checked by a doctor or physical therapist first.
Most men over 40 do well with two to three strength sessions a week. The CDC and the American College of Sports Medicine both recommend working all major muscle groups at least two days a week. Matt will set the right number based on your recovery, schedule and goals.
Probably not by much, so it's best not to count on it. A 2026 systematic review in PeerJ suggests testosterone rises for a short time after a hard lifting session, but a 2019 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Physiology found resistance training did not significantly change resting testosterone in older men. What lifting reliably does is build muscle and strength. If you think your testosterone is low, talk to your doctor.
Many men feel a difference in energy and strength within a few weeks. Visible changes usually take a few months of consistent training and better eating habits. Turning it into a lasting habit typically takes six months to a year.
Yes. Some of Matt's most consistent clients are men in their 50s and 60s, and beyond, with programs built around strength, balance, single-leg work and joint-friendly lifts that help you stay independent into your 70s and 80s. For some health conditions we may ask for clearance from your doctor before you start.
At Form Fitness, an in-studio session is $100 with no contract, or $95 a session with a 10-session package and $90 with 24. In-home training starts at $150 a session, and online coaching is $200 a month. Your first consultation is free.
